and silence

when the lines
that tether
to the outside
have snapped
and the seat
where power

is rusted

into dust

when rocks
become
weapons of destruction
and little bearded men
are organizers
of a war
that no one
truly wins
fists raised
slogans hollered
signs waved
catcalls of
determination

weighed down
by rage
and fear
that another day
will come
without knowing
peace
yet the
bigots
and cowards
in favor
of the status quo
and the naysayers
and the
don’t-rock-the-boaters
tremble
clamping down
on necessary freedoms
to keep the scraps
they have
been fed

what will you
do
when they come
for you?

with their guns
and flamethrowers
and trumped up charges
and lies
their
sniffing dogs
and chain gang threats
hands out
for bribes
and making promises
that they just
can’t wait
to break

for the darkness
and silence
and clarity
will come
when the flames
